St. Croix IronMan Annual Challenge
The St. Croix Ironman Triathlon offers a challenge that is grueling for the body yet inspiring for the spirit. Held annually on the idyllic isle of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, the race draws challengers from all around the world.
The boost to the island's economy in the way of hotel and other rental occupancy, ground transportation as well as all manner of food and drink and souvenirs is only complimented by the many friendships that develop during the days leading up to and including the race date.
Participants swim the Christiansted Harbor, a mid-isle bike course out to the East End and back (including the legendary "Beast", a 600-foot climb in a stretch of highway 7/10 of a mile long with an average grade of 14 percent and a maximum grade of 21 percent; and finally a run along the north shore and eventually back into Christiansted. There are a limited number of slots for those wishing to triathlon world championship qualifiers.
