Sea Turtles Do What They Do... on Seaturtle.org
Sea Turtles are just about everywhere there are oceans except for the arctic regions. Their role in the ecology is simple: they are natural lawn mowers! Their feeding on seagra
sses fosters the spread of this cover over the ocean floor, and helps to provide a valuable shelter for fish hatchlings, shellfish and crustaceans, and other ocean life. They are also able to consume the dangerous box jellyfish with no ill effects, so their dining helps to save lives every year. So, they are very important.
Unfortunately, many sea turtles are endangered due to the desire for their flesh and their shells, as well as encounters with natural predators... and their numbers have dwindled.
One of the best ways to engender compassion for any living creature, be it human or animal, is through education. And that is where Seaturtle.org comes in! The group's mission i
s to "Organize the world's sea turtle information and make it universally accessible and useful." It began with "Turtle Tidings" in 1996 and now involves instructional programs, participation in global conservation efforts, and is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization.
