British Virgin Islands
Category: Islands
The Virgin Islands are often called the "British Virgin Islands" to distinguish them from the nearby United States Virgin Islands (the former Danish West Indies), but these are indeed the "true" Virgin Islands.
The British Overseas Territory of the Virgin Islands includes over 50 islands with the main populated areas being Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. The islands get their name from Christopher Columbus having named them after "the 11,000 virgins" of St. Ursula (Santa Ursula y las Once Mil Vírgenes)
