Barbados is situated outside of the "hurricane belt" in the Lesser Antilles and is a part of the Lesser Antilles
First visited by the Portugese, the island was eventually claimed and settled by the United Kingdom and the island nation is now considered an independent state and Commonwealth realm of the U.K. Barbados is considered to be the most well-developed of all the Caribbean island countries.
