Caribbean Music Industry Comes Together for CME
by Anita Davis
Held annually: Music and recording professionals throughout the world are welcome to enjoy the Annual Caribbean Music Expo (CME).
With an emphasis on participation from the English, Spanish and French speaking Caribbean, the Expo boasts the presence of
music industry professionals from developed music markets such as the United States, England, France, Germany, Holland and
the Scandinavian countries.

The yearly CME conferences seek to address a number of important business issues related to musical performers. Past
topics have included The Media and Music, Music in Advertising and Sponsorship, Music Promotion and Distribution on the
Internet, Rights Management Online: A Look at the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) and Internet Piracy, Artiste
Management, and Production and Songwriting. Several music industry executives and professionals from the UK, USA, and the
Caribbean participate yearly.
Entities represented have included Billboard magazine, Motown Records, Universal Records, VIBE magazine, Music
Business International, ASCAP, and Black Radio Exclusive.
The administrative and legal aspects of the music business are often sadly overlooked or not understood by musicians,
singers and composers. As music of Caribbean origin becomes profitable on a global scale, it is important that the creators
of these art forms learn how to reap the rewards of their efforts. The CME seeks to narrow the chasm between Caribbean
managers and artists and the eventual rewards that come with its marketing and development of reggae, calypso, soca and
their various derivatives.
